PRIMITIVE STONEWARE SOAP DISH. Before we moved out of our city home built in St. Louis in the year 1893, people told us we should dig up the original CISTERN Outhouse area that use to exist on the property. I hesitated until our neighbors dug up theirs and found some fun and interesting bottles, dishes, and other items. I was not sure of what I would find when we dug up ours, but this was one of those treasures.!!! I honestly do not know how to determine the type of pottery it is. My research showed it could be any of the titles I have listed. It has a salt glaze looking finish or a sponge ware finish. It also has a Yellowware look. I WELCOME ANY INFORMATION YOU MIGHT KNOW ABOUT THIS ! T are no markings. It measures 6 1/4 inches long 4 1/4 inches wide and stands almost 3 inches tall.
It is in excellent condition for having lived in the ground for who knows how long. ( It was actually protected within a crock) T is one small chip ( see last photo ) I have decided to get rid of this, because in spite of the interesting way I found it, it really is not my style. I am keeping other treasures from the Cistern though ! Now this Primitive treasure can become yours, along with the story of its origin. Thanks for looking. I DO NOT ACCEPT RETURNS.
