STRATFORD – DUBLIN – 70 YEAR OLD BRIAR - MYSTERY PIPE – BLACK SANDBLAST – PRE-WORLD WAR II BOWL – JUST BROKEN IN – PLEASE ALLOW TWELVE PHOTOS TO LOAD
This pipe has a history, but it isn’t talking! In the late 1980s, either the distributor of Ashton or James Upshall…..I can’t remember….offered these pipes as a one shot deal. The bowls were discovered while tearing down an old building that had been vacant since the London Blitz in 1941. When they were in the process of taking it down, someone found about 200 assorted bowls in a sub basement. T was an attempt to locate the owner, but t was no record of any pipe store or pipe manufacturer in the building before WW II. In fact, t was no record on anyone in the general vicinity of the building that had anything to do with pipes. As no one had been in the building since the War, these bowls are Pre-WW II vintage. They were fitted with stems, given the ‘STRATFORD” name and distributed. I was alerted to them by Paul McDonald of Ehrlich’s, who told me that they smoked great and were worth taking a look at. I did, and took home two. They were mainly sold in the US, but they may have been sold in England as well. Nevertheless, t were only about 200 of them. You can see the deep blast and the grain pattern in the bowl. This particular pipe had extra thick walls, and smokes very cool. I wish I had more information of this pipe, but that’s all that I can recall, as it was over 15 years ago. If anyone knows more about this pipe, I would be more than happy to hear from you. is a pre-World War II pipe that just broken in! The pipe measures 5 ¾ inches in length. The inside of the bowl is nearly 1 ¾ inches in depth and the inside diameter of the bowl is ¾ of an inch. The walls of the bowl are ¼ of an inch thick. On the bottom of the bowl and shank, on natural finish is “SRATFORD – MADE IN LONDON ENGLAND” (see photo below.) The pipe is just broken in and t are no marks on the bit.
