A mahogany case containing a Marine Distance Meter and a screw-on telescope/magnifier, marked on the instrument 'STUART'S MARINE DISTANCE METER, R/COS/79. PATT. 498,, SERIAL No. 7009/KLH/501'.I never seen a marine distance meter before and I have to say that I don't know how it works. The instrument is well designed with many components. The main body of the instrument is made of what looks to be very thick bakelite? with brass plate and rack, metal ruler and telescope holder. There are two prisms, the short one is fixed to the frame and the long one can be moved from side to side by rack & pinion. The ruler with scales from 0 to 200 is fixed on top of the instrument and the telescope holder is fixed over the prisms. A white plate with scales marked 'CABLES' on the front and a table on the back. The instrument is showing very little signs of use, it is in excellent condition. The rack & pinion is moving smoothly, the prisms are excellent and the telescope works well with the prisms. The telescope also gives clear images on its own in short distance. The case was well made with brass hinges, catches and green felt trims, stamped '523-6994, MARINE DISTANCE METER, R. C.O.S'. The case measures approx. 7 3/4 x 4 5/8 x 2 inches. Please see photos for details. I've set a small starting price on this smart instrument, so good luck to you read more
