B eautiful, working Stewart- Warner small walnut radio model 5R5 manufactured around 1941 by the Stewart-Warner Instrument Corporation of Chicago, Illinois. This radio plays Standard Broadcast, and Short Wave (2.2 to 7 MHz). The beautifully rounded cabinet designed by Ingraham is made of solid walnut and burl veeners, trimmed in choclate brown lacquer. A magnificent radio and a real showpiece.
CHASSIS: This radio has new capacitors and a new safe power cord was installed, resistors were checked and replaced if out of tolerance, tubes checked and replaced as needed. All moving parts were cleaned and lubricated. The radio was cleaned inside and out. Knobs and dial move as they should, and the radio picks up many stations across the dial. ABOUT THE CABINET FINISH: My whole lacquer finishing process takes approximately 3 weeks, from the first coat of lacquer to the final rub. I build up about 12 to 15 coats of lacquer over a week long period, with a light wet sanding using 800 grit sandpaper on every third coat. When I feel I have built up enough lacquer, I begin wet sanding with 1000, 2000 and 4000 grit sandpaper. I again apply 3 more coats of lacquer, then wet sand with 2000 and 4000 grit sandpaper. I then rub out the finish with fine cut rubbing compound. I use only Mohawk professional grade lacquers on my cabinet work. The results are magnificent- ending up with a glass like finish. DETAILS: The knobs were meticulously cleaned and buffed. The lighted dial acetate is clear and the original dial scale is in good condition. The radio has a built in antenna for Standard Broadcast and Short Wave reception needs an attached wire for good reception, (though the bandwidth for this radio is limited to only 7 MHz.) The cardboard back is an exact reproduction of the original. The finish is smooth and subtle to the touch. DIMENSIONS: 14.5" wide, 6.5" tall, and 6" deep FINALLY: The radio plays loud and clear. I sell a variety of restored radios, both wood and bakelite, (but mainly wood), from the 30's thru the 50's, so check back often, check out my other listings and be sure to put me on your favorites list. Thanks for looking (and bidding), Larry (note: i carefully pack all my radios in a new box with a plentiful amount of new packing material so you will receive your radio in an excellent, undamaged condition.) |
