USS AMERICA (CVA-CV-66) The "super carrier" USS America, which is more than 1,000 feet long and displaces about 80,000 tons , exceeds the size of the giant Japanese World War II battleships Yamato and Musashi, and the carrier Shinano, which all displaced close to 70,000 tons. The America was the third carrier of the non-nuclear Kitty Hawk class, and the first to be retired, a victim of post-Cold War budget cuts after 31 years at sea. It launched warplanes during the Vietnam War, the 1986 conflict with Libya, the first Gulf War, and over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the mid-1990. For five line periods consisting of 100 days on "Yankee Station" off the coast of Vietnam, USS America's aircraft pounded at roads and waterways, trucks and waterborne logistic craft (WBLC), hammered at petroleum storage areas and truck parks in an attempt to impede the flow of men and war materials to the south. She lost a pilot in 1972 to a communist missile, and received five battle stars for her service in the Vietnam War. Sadly, the carrier was decommissioned sunk in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 300 miles off the Virginia coast, on 14 May 2005, following a series of tests consisting of underwater and surface simulated attacks on the ship.
