Super Circus # 1 - Funny Animal Comics From The Golden Age ! Super Circus # 1, 1951 - GD 2.8 - Canadian Edition All right, an interesting find this time out. Super Circus # 1 showcases the talents of television circus stars Mary Hartline , Ringmaster Claude Kirchner and two of the creepiest clowns Ive ever seen: Cliffy The Clown and Scampy The Clown . Scampy is particularly unpleasant looking on this cover. But that's probably just me. Shudder. Anyhow, the Canadian publishers really didn't seem to care too much about their audiences. This issue starts off with a text piece on the inside front cover that seems to explain about 6 pages of comic story, then the illustrated part comes next with page number 7. T are no pages missing, the art just starts with page 7! Then, in the midst of one of the stories, the panels switch from color to black and white, then bakc again! I must admit, the black and white is much more appealing than the color version. Also, this issue is 36 pages, not 52, so t may be some stories missing that were in the US edition. Photo-cover. The inter-related stories start with a Sunday afternoon televised performance of the Super-Circus when everything that can go wrong, does go wrong. The Fat Lady was growing thin, the Fire-Eater was reduced to eating matches, Satan the tiger had escaped from his cage and the trapeze artists almost have a fatal fall. But no worry, the clowns come to the rescue. The next story has Scampy The Boy Clown in Grin And Bear It . Scampy takes an interest in animal training but makes the mistake of asking Tyranno The Great for advice. Next up, Mary Hartline appears in Practice Makes Perfect . The story is credited to Cal Massey . In this story, Cliffy the Clown wants to take up baton twirling and enlists Mary to his aid. She proves much nicer about teaching than Tyranno. Next up a text story with a great title: Laugh Clown, Laugh . It almost writes itself. Next up: Nicky The Tramp Clown needs A Little Place To Sleep . The hobo clown needs a little help with the makeup but still manages to fool railroad detective Oscar Offenbickle who has been chasing Nicky for years. Lastly, Cliffy and Scampy meet The Crancky Giant . I'd be cranky too if I had to wear such tight-fitting leotards. A strange comic that I don't even remember buying. This issue is completely unrestored and I am the original owner . From a smoke-free home. Important Note: This is the Canadian Printing/Edition published in Canada by Superior Publishers. I would advise anyone who is interested in Canadian printings and Canadian comics in general to look at my About Me page for other links to Canadian Comics information. Also any edition before # 26 of the Overstreet guide has some information as well. They are an excellent way to own Golden and Silver Age Comics at an affordable price.
