we have a rare and beautiful early W & L E Gurley Surveyor's vernier Compass in its original wooden box. This compass was sold through the agent James W. Queen and Company of Philadelphia. This fabulous compass dates prior to 1880 based on the dial layout and the super hand engraving. This is the largest size surveyor's compass with a 6 & 1/2 inch dial with 6 inch needle. For a plain surveyor's compass (without the vernier) of similar size, but without the box or sighting telescope, see the site: /a_mystery_compass1.htm . The silvered dial is in excellent condition, and the compass retains its original snap fit protective brass cover. All the original knobs and adjustments work well, retaining their fine knurling, and many of the parts are stamped with the number 3. The two spirit levels are intact. Most of the original lacquer is intact and as you can see in the photos, t are only a few small areas of tarnish or plating loss. The original hand dovetailed mahogany box is intact and fine. I have done nothing to this except clean the box with furniture polish, and apply some saddle soap to the original leather strap. In addition to the compass, t is a super original sighting telescope which comes in a fantastic coffin shaped wooden box. This was an optional accessory that could be purchased separately, and I have never seen an early one in this condition. T was some tape wrapped around a section of the telescope tube which I removed to insure that the brass tube was intact. The scope functions perfectly, but a few spots of laquer were removed with the tape. This telescope is marked W & L E Gurley, Troy N.Y. and July 9, 1878. It measures just under 9 inches long. The patent drawing, which appears identical can be viewed at: http://patimg1.uspto.gov/.piw?Docid=00205742&homeurl=http%3A%2F%2Fpatft.uspto.gov%2Fnetacgi%2Fnph-Parser%3FSect1%3DPTO1%2526Sect2%3DHITOFF%2526d%3DPALL%2526p%3D1%2526u%3D%25252Fnetahtml%25252FPTO%25252Fsrchnum.htm%2526r%3D1%2526f%3DG%2526l%3D50%2526s1%3D0205742.PN.%2526OS%3DPN%2F0205742%2526RS%3DPN%2F0205742&PageNum=&Rtype=&SectionNum=&idkey=NONE&Input=View+first+page For the advanced collector, this would make a nice addition. For all the spouses of advanced collectors, what a holiday gift!!! I have many more detailed photos that I will be happy to email to anyone interested upon request.
