is a seldom encountered German RURAL Police Bayonet/Sidearm, with matching unit marks, and marked brown police frog, in excellent condition. All you have to do to get an idea of the rarity of a Rural police bayonet versus the more common Municipal police bayonet is do a search on the internet. I managed to find only one that had already been sold, versus well over 100 municipal types. T are two factors which seperate the Rural police bayonet from the Municipal police bayonet. The first, and the most obvious, is the brown leather scabbard. The second, and just as important, if not more so, are the unit markings. Anyone with a little knowledge can turn a black leather scabbard brown. It's quite a bit more difficult to fake the unit markings. Municipal police bayonets are marked with an "S" before the actual unit marking, denoting Schutzpolizei. Rural police bayonets are marked with an "L" denoting Landjaegerei (rural constabulary). The matching markings on this sidearm are L.Lg.6., denoting Landjaegerei, Lueneburg District, Weapon issue number 6. This sidearm has been modified from a longer Weimar period police sidearm, as can be determined based on the fullers, which run the entire length of the blade, and the original holes filled in on the horn grips. The unsharpened blade retains 100% of the nickel finish. Maker marked "Alexander Coppel, Solingen" and the scales logo on the left ricasso, and the same scales logo again but larger on the right ricasso. T is also a small sunburst on the spine. Crossguard and pommel retain 99% of the nickel finish, with the only noticable wear to the tip of the Eagle's beak. Crossguard and locket marked L.Lg.6..The grips are in excellent condition and everything is present. The scabbard is also in excellent condition. The leather surface is very nice, and stitching is 100%. The locket and chape retain about 80-90% of the nickel finish, The locket shows some flaking, but is bright, having been protected by the frog, was the chape still retains more of the finish, but shows some surface nicks. The frog is in beautiful shape, and maker marked and dated on the rear. I can't make out the maker's name, but the date is 1938. Strangely, t are a few small leather nails, which look like the type used for the soles of shoes, that have been placed w the lower rivets normally would be on a frog of this type. I'm not sure why this was done, as the stitching is still quite strong t, and t were obviously never any rivets t either. Perhaps this spot had been a problem area on other similar frogs, and rather than wait for the frog pouch to start splitting away from the back, the original owner opted to reinforce that area. At any rate, these little nails are hardly noticable, as you can see in the pics. This is quite a rare piece and I'm happy to offer it. Please be sure to visit my seller page and read all instructions. If you require more pics, feel free to ask. Thanks for looking and happy bidding!
