This super Russian lacquer box from Kholui shows the bear in the Russian folk tale "General Toptygin." It is signed by the artist (Pastukhyna?) and says "Kholui" and "General Toptygin" in Cyrillic. I have included a high-resolution scan. Kholui has traditionally been one of the top four villages for Russian lacquer. This is from my own collection, acquired between 1989 and the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. For the long-time collectors, you might remember that things got a little sketchy after that period. A fair amount of fakes (including boxes with decals) were coming out, so I stopped collecting. (And my fascination with our "greatest enemy" waned a bit after the country fell apart.) On the other hand, the fall of the Soviet Union also led to a bonanza of creativity after things settled down. Anyhoo, all of my pieces are guaranteed Soviet-era and authentic. This box is in very good condition, with some imperfections that are typical of Russian lacquer, and the bottom shows just a bit of wear, as one might expect for a 25-year-old handmade item. The lid on this box is, by design, hingeless. On the inside of the lid, there is a sticker that says, "G8 Kholui $420."
