This superb Chokwe tribal art staff with the carved fertility figure was part of a recent house clearance of a gamekeepers estate. His father was a hunter and travelled to areas such of Africa, the oriental countries of China, Japan with other visits to Australia and many parts of Europe. Whilst in his pursuit of game, he imported many items of tribal art, carvings in many materials, furniture and various icons from the 18th, 19th and later centuries. This is a superb 19th century African tribal art staff, which during our research we have been informed it originates from the Chokwe tribe, which is part of the Congo region. A wonderful intricate male fertility carving. Wonderful figure with two tribal crosses to the rear. The carving is from one length of wood with an overall length of about 43inches. Would have been used for tribal ceromonies and festivities. Condition: Considering the age, the overall condition is excellent with no blemishes. Besides being a very collectable 19th century Chokwe tribal art carving of a fertility staff of an outstanding quality, would also look fabulous displayed.
