A superb antique silver sewing set, made in France, about 1890. The green leather case comprises three tools: a thimble, a stiletto and a pair of embroidery scissors, all in mint condition. They have an embossed design of tiny scrolls and leaves on a twisted background with a matte finish. The thimble and the stiletto have an ornate cartouche which are still empty. The thimble is gilded inside; it is about 22 mm. high, 17 mm. wide. The scissors are 3 7/16" long, 1 1/2" wide. They open and close to the end of their tips and they are still sharp. The stiletto is 1 11/16" long. The thimble and stiletto have the hallmark of the boars' head, for silver made in Paris after 1838. The stiletto has a a lozenge shaped silversmith hallmark that is difficult to decipher. There is a hallmark of a crab on each of the scissor handles. This is the mark for silver made after 1838 outside Paris. All tools have the same design and they are original to this case. The green leather case is embossed with gold dots. It opens and closes perfect by a brass push button clasp. The backside of the case features a tear in the leather between the bottom and the lid, caused by age or by too far opening.
