Stunning signed Steuben Bowl designed by Frederick Carder c.1933 Consider this unusual vintage Steuben bowl designed by Steuben founder Frederick Carder. It is from a series of art deco bowls and vases designed in the early 1930's and known as "grotesques"--but don't let this unpleasant title be off putting. This is one very beautiful bowl, with tremendous clarity and a beautiful clear ringing tone. This bowl was designed during a time of major upheavel at Steuben--as the master genius & founder Frederick Carder was being forced aside and the brash new Steuben (the one we have grown to love) was pushing forward with new glass formulas for optical purity and a determination to market clear glass only and pieces with an emphasis on more modern--artist driven design. This lovely vintage/deco bowl, created during this transition period at Steuben, is in superb condition--having no chips or cracks or dings. On the very closest inspection I find just a very few scratches on the base from display and a few on the body--all consistent with a vintage piece that has seen light use and has been well cared for. T is no cloudiness or staining in the glass. T are a few small bubbles in the finish, a hallmark of hand made glass. This large bowl is over 9" wide side to side and 5" deep back to front, it is almost 5" high and weighs almost 2lbs. The winning bidder/collector will be very pleased! New Steuben bowls of this size sell in the $1000+ range. Recently Steuben has started to re-introduce some Carder era pieces and the least expensive new item of this scale was $1400. The auction for this beautiful bowl has no reserve and a fair starting bid for a Steuben bowl of the Carder era that is in excellent condition. Thank you for your interest in this item and please look at the other art glass I am offering on Ebay this week. (this Bowl with its folded and shaped base is Steuben Shape #7535 and appears on page 241 of the 1998 edition of Frederick Carder and Steuben Glass: American Classics by Thomas P. Dimitroff. Similar bowls also appear on page 67 of Frederick Carder: Portrait of a Glassmaker by Paul V. Gardner 1985). Copies of these pages will be shipped with this bowl. I pack with care, using high quality pack materials and double boxing fragiles to insure your items will arrive in perfect condition.
