This is without doubt the finest silver gilt ( gold wash on silver) Scottish gemstone brooch I have ever listed on E Bay. I have collected agates in Scotland for over 20 years and know where most of the lovely gemstones that Victorians used for their classic jewellery were found. The amazing stones are an amazing selection of gold moss agate from Burn Anne in Ayrshire, pink Fife agate, green bloodstone from the isle of Rum, grey banded agate from Montrose, red jasper from the Campsie fells in Stirlingshire and two wonderful facetted golden citrines from the Cairngorm mountain range. All the stones are in excellent condition with no cracks or chips. The brooch has no hallmarks which is fairly normal for brooches of this period, but has been fully tested and is silver with a gold wash ( gilt). The gilt is slightly worn on the back near the safety chain loop and the outer ring. The width is big at 5.2 cm ( just over two inches ) and 6.2 cm in length. The pin and C clasp are in good working condition and original. The brooch has it's original loop on the back for a safety chain and pin. This brooch is big, and has a superb heavy solid feel and just the BEST hand engraving you will ever see on one of these brooches!
