For your consideration we have a superb c1850 Chinese carved ivory tangram puzzle. This amazing boxed puzzle was produced in Canton, China during the height of the 'Old China Trade' era around c1850 for export to the West. These puzzles were first invented in China around the late 18thc and were made in many mediums such as cardboard, wood, horn, shell, ivory and many more materials. These were offered just as the puzzle themselves or with other Chinese puzzles & games sometimes together housed in a beautiful lacquer box fitted for each item. This particular tangram is a good one carved from elephant ivory in a square box with a sliding lid containing (7) carved and pierced ivory geometric shapes. The box is deeply carved on all sides and lid with the bottom showing a flower grouping in a more shallow relief. The sliding lid is ecspecially good as the carving is done in a 3d effect depicting many figures all performing some type of activity being surrounded by outdoor scenes which contain trees, garden seats, plants and Chinese architecture. The (7) inner pierced pieces are done with great attention to details by a highly skilled Cantonese craftsman. Condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, repairs or losses. Sizes are 2-1/8" square x 9/16" High. This is without a doubt the best one of this type I have ever owned or seen in the 25 years of collecting and dealing in the Chinese arts.
