My neighbor inherited a bunch of glass working / fusing materials and supplies when her dad passed. He was a glass blower. He also used molds. None of us knew what to do with his personal glass supplies. So, we are posting glass this man has had for decades right on ebay! Please note that even though he was into glass for 40 years or so, none of us have his knowledge so, we'll do the best we can to describe all of the things we are listing, but really need you to look at the photos so you can be the judge of what you are bidding on. WE HAVE FOUND OUT A FEW THINGS THAT MIGHT BE INSIGHTFUL: The decedent was a well respected Authority on American Glass We verified with The Pairpoint Company that he did make glass art that Pairpoint sold. We have verified that he was a curator of glass museums. He was a glass collector & Recognized American Glass Historian & Glass Artist. We intend to sell some of his private collection of glass art and utilitarian glass right on ebay. The family does not want his name advertised on ebay, you need to email us if you want information on him at and in the subject line type INFO ON AUTHOR / Glassmaker SO MARK US AS A FAVORITE AS OUR AUCTIONS MIGHT BE VERY INTERESTING TO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW. I personally know very little about this oil lamp, but I hit the ebay antiques discussion board, antiques chat room and ebay glass chat room to gather information that may pertain to this particular item. Feel free to read those boards for yourself and see what the other ebayers in those chat rooms have to say. ALL OF MY GLASS ON AN "AS IS AND AS SHOWN BASIS". I ONLY HAVE THE TWO WHALE OIL LAMPS. I AM PLANNING TO LIST BOTH LAMPS THIS WEEK. ONE OF THESE LAMPS IS GOING TO BE LISTED ON TUESDAY JUNE 23RD AND THE OTHER (AS LONG AS T IS PLENTY OF ACTIVITY (BIDS) DENOTING INTEREST ON THE FIRST ONE POSTED, THE OTHER WILL BE LISTED ON THURSDAY JUNE 25TH. IF T ARE NOT A GOOD NUMBER OF EBAYERS INTERESTED WE WILL EITHER KEEP OR DONATE THE OTHER TO A MUSEUM. BOTH ON ONE WEEK AUCTIONS, AND WE WILL NOT END EITHER OF THEM EARLY, EACH OFFERED AT NO RESERVE, WE LET THE EBAY COMMUNITY SET THE VALUE! YOU ARE BIDDING ON EXACTLY WHAT IS SHOWN IN THE PICTURES ON THIS AUCTION:
Typed in red are the only FACTS that I know , I went to Antiques Chat Boards and Discussion Board to get opinions from those that hopefully know much more than I do & I would not have been able to list this item without their help. Many thanks to all those that helped. I highly recommend using ebays Chat Boards, t are some remarkable people on t! Appr. 9" tall, base diameter is 4 1/2" top reservior to hold the oil, the diameter is approx. 2 1/2" at the widest point1 lb 4.4 ounces please look at the top view of the the eighth picture to see the very thin line on the right side top. I cannot feel it with the tip of my fingernail on the inside or outside of the flaw, I don't know the lingo, but am thinking it is a flaw inside the glass. I put water in the reservior and turned it upside down, covering the opening in the top to see if water would leak, and IT DOES NOT. THE FOLLOWING ARE OPINIONS OFFERED ON THE TWO WHALE OIL LAMPS, after providing photographs and provenance to those on the chat boards. They are opinions only and not being offered as facts. Yes, you have two whale oil lamps. They are early, 1820's to 1832ish. The burners sat on top and were not attached. The discs below the fonts (oil holders) are t to catch any spillage. They look to be free blown and the crude wheel cutting makes them awsome. I believe them to be American, but it would be almost impossible to determine a maker. As to the burner used: Imagine a quarter size disk with two, side by side tubes coming out of the top and bottom. These tubes would be about 1/4 inch in diameter and would accomodate round wicks. The tubes extend about 1/2 inch above and about an inch below the disk. Whale oil is a little thick an...
