Either unfinished, or intended as an en plein air sketch, this painting is unsigned.Cropsey is of course best known as America's painter of Autumn landscapes, and this gem is an excellent testament to his reputation.One of America's most important 19 th century artists, the internet is full of biographic information as well as numerous auction records.Condition Report:Wax lined on canvas and with replacement stretcher. Under UV examination, there appears to be an approximately one inch diagonal line of inpainting in the boulders at lower left corner and a thin n-shaped line of inpainting approximately 3 inches tall on either side and 5 inches across located in the far right and involving the mountains and sky.
