This is a marvellous Bahtiari Tribal Rug from the wilds of Central Persia. Difficult to age it is probably 60-70 years woven. It measures exactly 9' 1" X 6' 3". A wonderful Tribal weaving from a little known and exotic area of Iran/Afganistan.Some leanings also to the tribe of the Khorrasan.The Bakhtiari federation is one of the most powerful groups in the whole of Iran. The classic bakhtiari design is the 'garden design' consisting of repeated squares containing stylized trees and plants. Bakhtiari rugs are firm in their weave with bold drawings and rich deep colors as is this example.Beautiful earthy browns with exact stimulating neat borderwork, only explored by Bahtiari jutes, as is typical in these weavings. This 'garden design' is called 'Chahar Mahal' which means 'four places' in Persian, and is comprised of various leaf patterns, tree of life and floral motifs in earthy reds, greens, brown and whites. Ten of the gardens are 'prayer rug' panels, which is very unusual and quite lovely. This is a hand woven naturally dyed rug in captivating nomadic ancient designs.This rug is over half a century woven and consequently has some very slight color bleed but it does not impact on the overall beauty of the rug.A wonderful Bakhtiari mix of weaving styles and impactive harmonious design. It is a very heavy rug weighing in at 40 pounds.With intricate colorful lines of border demarkation, this is a truly an interesting work of Persian Tribal art.
