We continue to criss-cross Italy searching for exceptional Religious Artifacts to present to you on Ebay. This week we are very pleased to offer several stunning pieces. Dating from the 1800's we are offering an elaborate Monstrance with Cherubs, a large ornate Silver Sanctuary Lamp, a Silver Standing Reliquary, and a magnificent Embroidered Standing Reliquary. From the 1700's we have a beautifully tooled Incense Holder (Navicella) and from the early 1900's t is an IHS Chalice and a beautiful Nun's Ex-voto. IN THIS AUCTION we are pleased to offer for your consideration this stunningly elaborate Italian Altar Monstrance from the 1800's festooned with Cherubs and multi-colored glass stones. It is an impressive size measuring 18 1/4 inches (46 cm) high and 11 inches (29 cm) wide. The Luna window is 3 3/8 inches (8.7 cm) in diameter. The Monstrance is a magnificent combination of gilt and silver plate. The beautiful radiating rays are dramatic and are adorned with several winged cherubs and clusters of grapes. At the top t is a beautiful all-seeing eye surrounded by two full-figure Cherubs and a stunning three-dimensional crown. The pedestal base is ringed with sculpted Cherub appliqués separated by flowing Art Nouveau designs. A Classic "egg and dart" pattern encircles the first tier of the base and adds a finishing touch to the pedestal. As you work your way up the armature of the Monstrance t is a wonderful three faced hand-hold festooned with carvings of full figure Cherubs. The All Seeing Eye or the "Eye of Providence" has a history that dates back to the Egyptians. However, the symbol began to appear in Christian art in the 17th and 18th centuries. It is a symbol showing an eye surrounded by rays of light (the Glory of God) and is usually enclosed by a triangle. It represents the eye of God keeping watch on mankind. The Triangle that holds the eye represents the Holy Trinity. This is a highly decorated - and one might even say whimsical - Monstrance. Starting with the full figured floating Angles above the "Eye of Providence" at the apex of the Monstrance; to the Silver cloud bursts containing Winged Cherub Heads; and on to the Floral and Grape Clusters at the bottom - not to mention the brilliant Blue, flaming Red and magnificent Turquoise glass "stones" that circle the Luna window; this is a Monstrance that is full of light and beauty. A spectacular addition to your collection of religious artifacts or a superb altar piece to be returned to Liturgical service.
