ANTIQUE Victorian BURR Walnut, EBONY &BRASS INLAID WRITING BOX / Work box Description: A really wonderful example of a complete lady’s Victorian burr walnut, ebony and brass inlaid combination jewellery/ sewing/ writing desk-top box with fitted interior which dates to circa 1870. The box is brass bound, inlaid with brass centre plaque (unengraved) and brass key escutcheon. The top lifts opens to reveal a fully fitted interior with an eye catching royal blue cushioned silk finish. The front drops down and then is folded over to reveal the original tooled velvet writing slope, covered with rich royal blue velvet and gold patterned borders. The office section is complete with original inkwell with domed lid, a mahogany stationary letter rack with various sections, handy for storing away important letters and documents, and a dished pen tray. There is a framed slate above which slides out to write notes etc. To the front of the box there are three glazed window apertures which contain a perpetual calendar. The date, day and month can easily be changed by forward winding or rewinding the little brass knobs to the top. There is a secret document folder, which has been sympathetically restored, held in place with a gilt metal floral latch behind the original cushioned silk interior to the lid.
