An Edwardian English Military Mess Lantern Type Table Cigar Lighter of Unusual Design Made by the Famous Silversmiths Messrs. Hukin and Heath in 1903 in Fully Hallmarked English Sterling Silver, in Mint Condition
You are bidding on a quite rare Edwardian English Military Mess Lantern Type Sterling Silver Table Cigar Lighter, of a quite unusual design with a cylindrical central opening, this perhaps for cigarettes. This was made in 1903 by the distinguished firm of Silversmiths Messrs. Hukin and Heath, of Birmingham and London. They are chiefly noted for the originality of their designs, including many by the famous Dr. Christopher Dresser, and in this period were headed by John Thomas Heath and John Hartshorne Middleton. This is a quality piece, with a cast scrolling high handle, cast beaded decoration to the top and foot, and the cast nozzle for the wick with a screw fitting to the body of the piece. Unusually also the reservoir for the lamp oil is the bulbous belt around the central opening. AN UNUSUAL AND DECORATIVE PIECE SEE THE PICTURES AND DETAILS BELOW This unusual piece shows originality of design and fine craftsmanship. It is four and a half inches wide across the handle (4.5 ins / 11.5 cms) and stands two and three quarter inches high (2.75 ins / 6.5 cms). It weighs just under five and a half ounces (5.4 ozs / 151 grams) of fully hallmarked sterling silver. This cigar lighter bears the full English sterling silver hallmarks shown in the photograph above. These are the anchor town mark for Birmingham, the lion passant guarantee mark for English sterling silver, and a letter "d" the date letter for 1903. The maker's mark is a little rubbed, but is clearly the initials "JTH" over "JHM" in a shaped cartouche for John Thomas Heath and John Hartshorne Middleton, the principals of the famous firm of silversmiths Messrs. Hukin & Heath, of Great Charles Street, Birmingham and Charterhouse Street, Holborn, London. Reference - see John Culme The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths Jewellers and Allied Traders 1838-1914 , Volume I page 243 for details of this important firm.
