BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE UZBEK SUZANI, Central Asia, Uzbekistan, Tashkent area, late 19th to very early 20th century, and coming in near-mint, almost pristine, original condition for the collector. The exact size is: 6'-11" x 8'-1" (211 x 247 cm). The exuberantly sty Ied pattern on this classic "Karbaz" suzani from the Tashkent region was first drawn on the scarlet cotton ground cloth with ink or charcoal by a professional designer called ("Kalamash") and then the family members traced the design elements with fine silk embroidered needlework. They were made for the wedding and then used as colorful wall hangings giving the eye a dense, heavy, physical sense. Both continuous-thread couching and open chain stitch were employed for this striking example to create the "palak", or "sky", design that is said to represent planets and is reminiscent of early Islamic "Zandanaji" fabrics. Only wealthy Uzbekis were able to afford luxury items like this collectible textile relic. Considering its old age, this early specimen has survived in a most remarkable state of preservation. Compare this offering to the similarly designed published example from the Jack and Aviva Robinson Collection, now in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (2004.259.22). Refer to: Kate Fitz Gibbon and Andrew Hale, "Uzbek Embroidery in the Nomadic Tradition", 2007, page 148. Because of the impeccable condition and copious amounts of natural-dyed silk used (including expensive cochineal dye lots), this lovely Central Asian Taskent Suzani has a heavy handle to it in the hand. Careful precautions must be employed to use it as a wall hanging so it does not sag from the pull of gravity over time. There are still some loops present along one edge of the reverse that were sewn to the back when the weaving was it first displayed in an Uzbeki home. I have seen these types being used as a decorative spreads for the bed, too. If you have any questions about this lovely silk embroidered Uzbek "Suzani" spread, only email Michael Phillips at or feel free to call my studio phone . Please take a little extra time to view the other fine antique weavings of merit that I have posted exclusively with eBay auction this week and remember to bookmark my eBay seller ID: IMOKUB2 (I am okay, you be too) to your "favorite sellers" list to see all my weekly future offerings having this age, beauty, quality, condition, rarity, and collectible nature. NOTICE that ALL of my eBay antique weavings come with an unconditional 100% money back refund guarantee (including ALL s/h/ins. fees) if for ANY reason the winning bidder is not totally happy with their rug, carpet, bag face, or textile purchase from me. GOOD LUCK BIDDING.
