For Sale 99p Start & No Reserve A VICTORIAN SOLID SILVER VESTA CASE, HALLMARKED BIRMINGHAM 1898, MAKER: GEORGE UNITE. This is a beautiful Victorian Sterling silver vesta case it was made by George Unite Caroline Street, Birmingham, and then hallmarked at the Birmingham assay office in 1898 Carrys The Very Earliest Of His Hallmarks It measures 2 1/8 inches (54mm) in height including the fixed suspension ring (1 1/4inches (33mm) width . the side of the lower flange carries a clear set of British Sterling silver hallmarks for Birmingham 1898 and a makers mark of 'GU' for George Unite. also has hallmarks to the inside of the cover. It weighs on my scales (28 grams). It is almost square in shape and is very strongly and well made, the sides are brightly cut with foliate engraving , one having a shield shape cartouche with the monogram 'WW', there is a fixed suspension ring to the top which in turn has a strong floating ring, the right hand side of the hinged and sprung cover has a broad thumb piece. The base has an inserted steel toothed striker. The interior is gilded but dirty Condition is excellent with a strong hinge the cover closes securely and is well sprung.
