U.S ARMY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT Surgical AMPUTATION SET~GEMRIG~1800's
We are pleased to offer this antique U.S. Army medical amputation surgical set from the mid 1800's Civil War era. The set was manufactured by J.H. Gemrig; 109 South Eighth St., Philadelphia. During the Civil War, Gemrig was a major supplier of surgical sets under contract to the Union forces. The box is made of solid mahogany with inset brass corner fittings & a center brass plate that reads U.S.A. MEDICAL DEPARTMENT. The case measures 16 ½"(L) x 6 ½"(W) x 3 ¾"(H) & features double latches that lock securely with a sliding brass lever. The case red velvet lined and consists of three separate compartments with sixteen surgical pieces & ebony handled instruments. Following is a list of the contents: 14 ¾" amputation knife marked Gemrig Phila; 14 ¾" amputation knife marked Otto & Sons (New York maker); 11 ¾" double-sided amputation knife marked Gemrig Phila; 4 ½" scissors marked Betz Germany; 6" artery tenaculum marked Gemrig (missing part of handle); 3-pc. chain saw with removable ebony handles, unmarked; 8" Lifting Back metacarpal saw knife marked Gemrig Phila; three approx. 11" curved staves or sounds, unmarked, one with tiny attached ring marked "coin"; tourniquet, unmarked; 4 ½" early style trephine skull drill with removable 3 ½" ebony handle, unmarked; 7 ¾" scissors with curved blade marked A.S. Aloe & Co. (St. Louis, Mo. maker). Some of the metal parts on the instruments have slight surface corrosion. The beautiful mahogany box has one tight 2" hairline & one long scratch near the top & front corner and the typical light surface nicks & scratches that one would expect from a piece of this age. The mahogany grain & brass fittings are absolutely gorgeous & the brass sliding locks work securely. The bottom of the box is without damage.
