Antique American manufactured Surveyor's Compass,owned and operated and signed by Miller W and T T Nickerson South Dennis Mass,on Cape Cod. Sold by S. Thaxter & Son,35 Central Street Boston. Made by E & G W Blunt New York as noted on the engraved silver dial face. Contained in its original mahagony box,with sellers paper lable affixed inside the lid cover. Solid brass 15 1/2" long base plate with two glass intact 2 1/8" vial spirit levels attatched. 6" glass face compass,with brass crystal protector cover(the first that I have seen). Engraved silver face plate,maker signed,engraved Fler De Lis decoration,indicating North,floral and trailing vine inner circle marked number 162. Compass point markings and degree marking on raised outer rim. Blued compass needle with brass needle lock, activated by threading a stud through a hole on the back side,two studs present for this purpose. The ends of the base plate are drilled to recieve the two, 6 1/4" tall brass line sights,held in place with brass studs that thread from the underside into the line sight foot. On the underside of the base plate is a 1 1/2" tall reciever for the tripod peg. Included as an accessory is a adjustible swiveling tripod peg extention.allowing the compass to be tilted in any direction (also a feature I have not seen before). All parts and pieces have slots and holders built into the box,box is solid with key lock(no key). Included is a letter from The Pole N' Gap Antiques Marine Antiques,American Folk Art and other expressions of American Spirit,Millis Mass. Describing the makers history and the sellers history and states "This is a fine instrument in good condition. Essentialy complete,it lacks some minor peripheral equipment: tripod,chamois bags etc. Circa 1840. Signed M A Tavers 14/5/73. Found here on Cape Cod,the Nickerson family history is well documented.
