An old surveryor's instrument. Possibly a simple theodolite? Stamped at varous points with the names Max Hildebrand, Frieberg, and Wichmann. We do not know if the instrument is complete, but what is present seems to be in excellent condition with some small areas of wear to the outer ring and to a few small points on the black finish. What we guess to be leveling screws turn easily and smoothly. There is no rust on the instrument. The wooden carrying case, of dove-tail construction, has an attached Wichmann metal lable to the inside of the hinged door. the instrument obviously, even to us, was designed to sit atop a tripod. The threads seem to be in excellent condition as well. the instrument stands about 7 1/2" tall and weighs 2# 8 oz (4# 10 oz including the box).
