It is surmounted by a compass and has a turnscrew action vernier scale on the two halves. The instrument revolves on the staff-mount - there is a clamp to lock the movement. The top of the instrument is turned using a thumbscrew - allowing precision adjustment of the vernier. The compass has the French O and E for West (Oest) and East (Est). It has a damper bar but the lock slide is missing. The needle has a jewelled pivot. The wires of the viewing slots are missing but easily replaced - all of the screws are in place. This instrument has no maker's name despite bing of the highest quality. There is one small impact dent on the rim near the staff locking clamp. Diameter 89.5mm. Height 190mm.
