SWEDISH SILVER GW Octagonal BOX 1867 SCENIC Floral Top

This SWEDISH .830 SILVER OCTAGONAL BOX is completely covered in a warm gold wash. It was made in 1867 and five of the six sides are engraved with a large house and four young trees. The top has a raised, hand-painted bouquet of flowers surrounded by the toothed bezel for a crystal that is gone. A stylized ray pattern is engraved around the center disk; the sun, perhaps? I said that the trees were young because they're small in relation to the house, and I wonder if this was perhaps a housewarming gift, engraved with the image of the specific home. The marks on the bottom are the Swedish three crowns, AL, N5 -- the date mark for 1867, and what looks like two capital Cs, one set backward and entwined with the other. According to Tardy's International Hallmarks on Silver, this is the mark for the town of Karlskrona, a city on the southeast tip of Sweden that was founded in 1680. The box is 1 1/4" wide and 1 1/8" high, not including the raised bezel. Apart from two dings on the blank panel below the hinge, and the missing crystal, it's in very good condition indeed. The gold wash covers the interior as well as the exterior, the hinge works smoothly, and the lid closes firmly. T are some initials engraved on the bottom -- RHN over FO; you can see them in the picture of the hallmarks, below. This is a small, precious piece, and I have to assume that something equally small and precious was kept in it; what will you put inside? Buyer pays $5 shipping and handling, plus insurance.
