i000000 Sweet Vintage Shabby Cottage Barkcloth Era Fabric Drape "And the day came when the risk to stay tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom" Let 2010 be the year you make change...take a sewing class...make a bag or pillow...open a small business from your home...do something that makes you giggle and warms your heart...2010 is all about hope kids...and hope means being positive..let this be the year you do something you've wanted to do for a long time..sign up for a local antique show...its a good time to start a small business from home...low overhead costs...low expenses...I predict a boom in small business this year...I see reasonably priced antique stores becoming popular again in downtown areas...if you feel powerless...tap your inner spirit...because if you don't...you may never know you missed an opportunity to discover yourself . Its been decades since Ive even really seen whats inside some of the bins Im unpacking from my warehouse storage thats traveled with me in my many moves...the most recent one to Jacksonville Florida...a bin that with its scent takes me back to the days of living some of the best times of my life...in Ocean Grove New Jersey...a seaside victoriana beach town that was erected in the mid 1800's as a retreat campground for religious methodists who sought a refuge by the sea for some good christians salt water bathing...a place w the first homes were tents built beside a makeshift open air temple w people would flock from Philadelphia and New York City for a dose of jesus and sunshine...within a decade of the discovery of Ocean Grove...tent homes were being built on wooden platforms from May thru September...and before long the wealthy church elders were building glorious victorians with all their gingerbread fanfare...built within feet of each other for close knit living....w families and friends gatd on porches able to chat with their next door neighbors with ease...with its strict moral values...blue laws were created that forbade the consumption of alcohol and closed the gates getting into the town in Sundays...no driving, roller skating, bikes or skateboards...and no beach access until 1pm when church services ended...it was a town that flourished with its own small downtown until the 70's when it met its demise....due to racial tensions in Asbury Park...a town immediately to its north....Ocean Grove steadily lost its visitors and became home to the mentally ill who were being discharged from Marlboro Hospital...by the mid 80's most all of the old hotels that once housed families with grand vacation plans....was now filled with people from Marlboro being boarded like animals....desperate hotel owners poor from the flight of vacationers turned their hotels into mini institutions complete with cooks for meals and nurses to dispense medications...the downtown became a haven of smokers and beggars who rocked back and forth on benches that once was used by children enjoying ice cream in a hot summer day...Ocean Grove seemed to have lost its soul...well until the late 80's when gays came into this once religious retreat and began fixing homes and opening small businesses...a contradiction by religious terms that the town still with its blue laws in place that gays would be the ones to bring it back...and by the mid 90's most every home and hotel was renovated and restored with new galleries, shops and restaurants and children eating ice cream on those old fashioned benches again and enjoying the fresh air of the sea....today Ocean Grove is a tranquil place...a hustling seaside town in the summer...a skip from NYC and worth visiting for its historic charm and to see the Great Auditorium w some of the best performers have played the great pipe organ underneath the american flag made of lights....I was fortunate to grow up nearby Ocean Grove and was one of the first gays to call it my home...way back in 1987 when I moved to my first apartment....and not long after my first bungalow that consisted of 3 rooms...cute as could be wi... read more
