Splendid Syro-Hittite Terracotta Idol of Astarte, with typical stylised bird-like features, with applied concentric eyes, breasts, double row stippled collar, wearing a crown-like headdress, pierced hands, long cylindrical body and flared foot, c. 2nd Millennium B.C.
Astarte The Mother Goddess, her name was then 'Ashterat ', Goddess of fertility who looked after women, the land, crops, even cattle and domestic animals. In the Old Testament of the Bible, she appears as Ashtoreth, and Solomon had a temple built in her honour near Jerusalem. Indeed, the Israelites sometimes revered the goddess as the queen of heaven and the wife of Yahweh. For more than 3000 years her cult was adopted by every culture including the Greeks and the Romans, who named her Astarte; Aphrodite is widely believed to have developed from Astarte.
