This framed oil on canvas is by the hand of Maria Szantho (1898-1984) , the noted Hungarian painter especially known for her female nudes and portraits. Date is unknown, but based on the appearance of the canvas and stretcher, it likely dates from the mid-20th century. One of the most important Hungarian artists of the 20th century, her works are regularly sold at auction houses in Europe and North America. The database alone shows over 200 auction records of her works in the past ten years. Szantho is believed to have been born in Szeged and died in Budapest.
Additional images forwarded upon request. This particular work is unsigned, but carries the stamp of the Magyar Nemzeti Galeria (Hungarian National Gallery) , indicating the work was authenticated and approved for export from Hungary. Canvas measures 16" by 20" and frame measures 19" by 23".
