PACIFIC BREWING & MALTING CO TACOMA BEER ETCHED PRE PROHIBITIOIN SAMPLE ADVERTISING GLASS TACOMA, WASHINGTON IN MINT CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Up for your bidding consideration is this nice but rare pre prohibition Tacoma Beer Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. sample/tasting glass from Tacoma Washington. This glass measures about 4" tall and 2 3/8" at the top. This glass reads "TACOMA BEER" "Mt. Tacoma" with an etched picture of the mountian. "Pacific Brewing & Malting Co., Tacoma, Wash." "Best, East or West". Great detail in the etching of this glass. Around the top rim is a gold painted band. This sample glass is made of very thin glass and was used for advertising purposes for Tacoma Beer. With the glass being so thin it is amazing it has survived all these years. Back in the day when customers would enter a bar or restrauant, lager beer was poured from kegs. Often times a customer would ask to sample the beers on tap. This glass was used for sampling. I have done some research on this brewing company and this glass, please read the information below. From what I can tell these glasses are rare and hard to find. I am starting the bidding a little higher than I usually do but t is no reserve. What a great glass to add to your collection. CONDITION : This glass is in rare mint condition. No chips or cracks. The etching is clear and not faded at all. The gold band around the rim is bright with very minor ware. This glass could use a light cleaning which I will leave up to the buyer. As far as condition goes it does not get much better than this. A BIT OF HISTORY ON THE PACIFIC BREWING & MALTING CO : In 1888 Anton Huth founded the Puget Sound Brewing and Malting Company. In 1897 the business was renamed the Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. and was located around Holgate and 25th streets in Tacoma, Washington. Part of this building is still standing today. In 1976 the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Early advertising for the Pacific Brewing and Malting company boasted "three famous products" and their slogan was "Best, East or West" (which is etched onto this glass). Apparently their 3 famous products were basically one in the same, the only exception being thier labels were different and they were marketed differently. *Pacific Beer - was the company's "home brew." Bottled in quarts and pints, Pacific Beer was served in bars, restaurants and available for home delivery by the case in and around Tacoma, Washington. *Tacomalt - was sold as an alcohol based tonic, which was typcial of the era. Advertised as a "delightful beverage and a healthful one too." Highly endorsed by physicians as a wonder tonic. It was particularly designed and advertised as a "nerve tonic and tissue builder." (Beer as a "nerve tonic", I can see that. As a "tissue builder", I don't know about that one.) *Tacoma Beer - was the company's "export" brand. Bottled in San Francisico, CA, Oakland, CA and for a while in Tacoma, WA. Early ads claim "Tacoma Beer has carried the name and fame of Tacoma as far as California, Hawaii and the Philippines." Hense the slogan "Best, East or West." Some claim Tacoma Beer put Tacoma Washington on the map in the early 1900's. Sadly, the Pacific Brewing & Malting Co. did not survive the anti-alcohol movement and by 1919 was out of business completely. In 1995 Tacoma's first micor-brewery was opened.
