This magnificent painted and enamelled porcelain plaque is believed to depict Mary Queen of Scots being led to her execution. Signed "Taillandier" and "D' Apres Tusquets" ("After Tusquets"). We believe "Tusquets" likely refers to a work by the noted Spanish painter, Ramon Tusquets Maignon (1839-1904). No hallmarks on the rear. Plaque measures 17 1/4" by 23 1/4", and frame measures 25 1/4" by 31 1/8" by 2 3/4". Total weight is approximately 20 lbs.

This is the work of a true master artist. Note the realistic appearance of Mary's ashen face and incredible details of her gold jewelry and costume. Her dress is brilliant blue enamel with touches of red, while the soldier's attire is brilliant yellow and red enamel. Frame is old and may be original to the piece. Note the wear to the green velvet that is set within the inner and outer edges of the front of the frame. The overall condition of the piece is very good, with no chips, scratches or other visible flaws of note. There is an old and professional restoration to a long crack across the top quarter of the plaque. Please inspect our images carefully.
On February 24, 2005, another enamel painted plaque by the same artist, depicting a female in renaissance costume, was sold for 3,600 British Pounds in lot 171, by Christie's London in their auction of 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art and Ceramics.
