T are important guidelines to be considered authentic Talavera. It must be made in the designated Talavera zone of States w the characteristics are consistent with the geographical regions and have origins in Spanish majolica. The Spaniards introduced this type of pottery but the Talavera word is used more in Mexico than in Spain. It is the oldest tin glazed ceramic in America and still being manufactured the same way as in the 16 th century. The potters in Mexico have centuries of experience behind them and are able to use the abundance of quality clay in the region. The clays used to create Talavera must be obtained from the natural deposits in this zone. The pottery must be hand formed using clay from the natural deposits of the Talavera Zone. Molds can be used only by pressing the clay into them. A glaze is used after baking and should craze and be slightly porous. The pottery is then handpainted using only six mineral pigments. Different colors can be created by mixing these pigments.
