On a superior, colorless, best metal blank, here is a tall, 9 1/4" compote in Elmira's always desirable (and difficult to acquire) #17 design. The maximum diameter of the bowl is 6 1/2" and it slopes in to about 5 3/4" across. All the desirable elements of a fine piece of American Brilliant Cut Glass are present, which made it the perfect candidate for a cover of the HOBSTAR -- the Journal of the American Cut Glass Association. The #17 design is structured around a double-mitered six point star whose fields are filled with bands of clear button cane, radiant stars, and silver diamond. The points of the star are all wrapped with symmetrical vesicas of silver diamond. Balanced, eye-catching, highly aesthetic. The pattern finishes around the top with a chain of stretched hobstars with flat stars between them. It's a beautiful design showing the best elements of the American Brilliant Period in cut glass laid out in a striking manner. The stem is fluted at both ends, notched at the top, the 6-sided tapered stem is finished out with chains of notched prism, and there's a gorgeous, heavily elongated air trap in the stem. A perfect 32 pt radiant star is on the base. The condition is as near perfect as one could hope for. There is some expected shelf wear on the base. I can't find even a nip although there may be one hiding somewhere read more
