Heavy ribbon neck ring with flutes over a sheartop and teardrop style measuring 14 inches tall and 5 1/2 inches in diameter at the base. Neck tilts slightly to the side as blown. This unusual shaped deck sweeper bottle is hand blown and has a crude pontil. Thick glass to prevent their breakage when thrown onto a merchant deck. Mint condition with no damage. A very high quality example. Purchased from a private Philadelphia collection. Nice dark purple color. Many tiny bubbles and multiple silica potstones throughout. Strong and stable. No fractures. Bottle has been professionally cleaned and surface desalted. Stable and salt free. Museum quality item. This is a 18th century heavy glass naval boarding weapon. Resembles a vase but is heavier glass. They are empty of powder and completely safe with absolutely no powder present. They are a heavy glass version of grenade like device resembling a teardrop grog bottle that was filled with a mix of gunpowder, metal scrapes and nails, then a cotton or canvas nitrate soaked rag was forced into the neck (the heavy glass ring around the neck base was added to prevent breakage), sealed with wax, and further sealed with tar soaked canvas and rope, A length of rope was often left on the neck so that the filled canister could be hurled further onto the deck of a merchant vessel from the rigging read more
