Tarzan and His Mate (MGM, 1934). Half Sheet (22 X 28 ). This was the second film in the MGM Tarzan series and is considered by most Tarzan enthusiasts to be the best. This film was also the only one in which Jane wore bikini-like attire (and no attire at all during the now famous skinny-dipping scene), which raised the eyebrows of women s groups everywhere as well as the heartbeats of young teenage boys. Irving Thalberg, head of production at MGM, insisted on sparing no expense on the Tarzan series with Johnny Weismuller. Thus the first two films cost approximately one million dollars each to produce, an astounding sum during the height of the depression. There are chips, small tears and nicks in the borders, typical fold lines and pinholes. Top notch restoration work has rendered these defects difficult to detect. This splendid half sheet shows Jane s controversial two-piece outfit on the lower left illustration. Fine/Very Fine on Paper.
