Tascam 246 PortaStudio Multi-Track Cassette Recorder with Owner's Manual This auction includes: - A Tascam 246 PortaStudio - An original Owner's Manual The Tascam 246 is basically a 4-track recorder, but up to 10 tracks can be recorded onto a tape by re-recording multiple tracks to an empty track, while simultaneously recording a live input onto that same track. The end result would have, for instance, 4 tracks on track 4, 3 tracks on track 3, 2 tracks on track 2, and 1 track on track 1. I bought this unit used several years ago, with the intention of doing some recording with my collection of hand drums, but, I haven't found the time for that yet, and it really looks like I probably never will. The pinch roller and idler tires are in very good shape, but the capstan belt was broken and the control belt was flabby, so I bought new belts and replaced them a couple of days ago. I connected an ElectroVoice 635A microphone and a pair of BeyerDynamic DT990 headphones, and, following the instructions in the Owner's Manual, recorded some voice input on all four tracks in all six channels. The recorded sound was perfectly clean and very robust. None of the controls made any kind of noise.
