* Shigaraki ware :
Shigaraki ware is the general term of the pottery baked in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture. Shigaraki ware will start in the 8th century, and is one of the 6 old kilns.
T is such abundant earth in Shigaraki that it can be called an inexhaustible supply. Two kinds of clay is formed as they are, and it bakes by unglazed. Then, the surface becomes quiet scarlet. Grains, such as feldspar contained in clay, spout out on the surface of a vessel. Green natural glaze is coated to it and it becomes the tasteful workmanship. It shows very various expression, though it is simple.
Only the jars and pots for every day were baked for hundreds of years after kiln starts. However, when it became in the late Muromachi period (the 16 century), Chanoyu (the tea ceremony) was in fashion, the jars and pots came to be treasured as tea-things. And while fashion of the tea ceremony went away at the Edo period (the 18 century), Shigaraki ware declined. But, Namako (sea cucumber) glaze was invented by Meiji Era (the 19 century), the Hibachi became popular, and it became the synonymous of Shigaraki ware.
Now, as well as a vessel, a table, a chair, etc. for gardens are made and especially the ornament of a raccoon dog is famous.
