E. CHALLINOR & CO. 3-Piece Tea Service Black Mulberry “Rose” Pattern Offered for your consideration is this extraordinary Staffordshire ironstone tea service, including the lidded teapot, lidded sugar box and creamer. Edward Challinor produced gorgeous ironstone in Tunstall, Staffordshire, England only between the years 1853 – 1862 (back-mark E. Challinor & Co.). Challinor is a hard-to-find maker and this beautiful black mulberry transferware pattern is ROSE (indicated on the back-mark). ROSE is a detailed floral and scrolled pattern. You can see the blue-ish tin pearlware glaze, especially on low areas of the forms (inner rims and bases, for example). TEAPOT · The 8 paneled sides flare down to the ridged, 8-sided base. Each of these panels has a vertical rib extending upward from the middle of the panel. There are molded grape leaves flanking the bottom of the handle. · The paneled neck flares upward to the 8-sided ½-inch wide rim. · The lid echoes the paneling and ridges of the body of the teapot. The knob is shaped like a bunch of grapes with upward turned stem. There are molded grape leaves on the lid, to each side of the knob. · The paneled spout has molded grapes at the inner upper edge and along the outer base (both under the transfer images). There are strainer holes pierced into the pot where the spout attaches. · The scrolled handle is formed to resemble the grape vine (much like the crabform handles resemble crabapple tree branches). There is a thumb rest at the top for ease of pouring. SUGAR BOX · The 8 paneled sides flare down to the ridged, 8-sided base. Each of these panels has a vertical rib extending upward from the middle of the panel. There are molded grape leaves flanking the sides of the handles. · The paneled neck flares upward to the 8-sided ½-inch wide rim. · The lid is identical in design to the teapot lid. It echoes the paneling and ridges of the body of the sugar box. The knob is shaped like a bunch of grapes with upward turned stem. There are molded grape leaves on the lid, to each side of the knob. · The handles are formed to resemble crossed grape vines which are flanked by molded grape leaves. CREAMER · The 8 paneled sides flare down to the ridged, 8-sided base. Each of these panels has a vertical rib extending upward from the middle of the panel. There are softly molded grape leaves flanking the bottom of the handle, which are not as pronounced as on the teapot. · The paneled neck flares upward to the scalloped rim. · The broad spout has a ridged rim. · The scrolled handle is formed to resemble the grape vine. There is a thumb rest at the top for ease of pouring. Please take time to examine the photos and email any questions you might have.
