Tempest Certain games, conceptually and visually, are created 'out of the box'. These games tend to be ahead of their time. Such forward thinking creators give us games that we remember for our lifetime. These games, however, sometimes don't get accepted by the mainstream right away. They develop a cult following that spreads from person to person, town to town, state to state, until a modicum of popular success is achieved. Tempest , the legendary beloved arcade game of 1980 , made by Atari, was, and still is such a cult arcade classic. It could also be said that Tempest is the first survival nightmare game. You're stuck above a hole, or in a tunnel depending on perspective , looking down (or in). You have no w to go, but must make your stand and survive against wave after wave of bizarre, evil shapes intent upon your demise . This concept is impressive genius born from an actual nightmare its creator, Dave Teurer had. No other game of its age exuded such a thrill of despair from the gamers playing it. T is no doubt Tempest would later spawn such survival nightmare games as Smash TV, and influence the entire genre of horror shooters. Visually, Tempest was also way ahead of its time. No other game used vanishing point perspective. This gave another nightmarish quality. Just w are those 'things' coming from anyway? You control a shooting crab-like bugger that is rotated along the top of each varying geometrically shaped hole. You must dodge enemy fire and creatures , while blasting other enemies out of existence. The dark creatures that attack could have been truly even more bizarre had technology been better at the time. As it is, they remain as concentric lines and weird shapes. Tempest will always be the game that looked and played far different from the other games of the Golden Age of the arcade . The cabinet and controls were even different from the rest back then. Controls for Tempest are even different from other games of its time. You control the shooter with a rotary handle. T are two fire buttons, one for normal shot and one for the supershot that kills everything on the screen once each level. Firing the supershot a second time provides diminishing returns; a third supershot gives you nothing. The cabinet is angular, giving it an alien appearance, but attractive nonetheless. It's side art isn't anything special, but not every game can have Centipede quality side art. Besides, game play is w this classic shines.
