P-6863/64"Guitars" - Al Viola A Brief History of These Recordings The Armed Forces Radio Service began operations in 1942 and was initially designed to bring recorded entertainment to American service men and women throughout the world during World War II. Broadcasting from short-wave stations, the AFRS was given carte blanche by both the radio networks and the entertainment unions to record programming broadcast over the US airwaves and, after editing out commercials and other time-specific content, distribute it to military outposts via 16" vinyl transcription discs. This agreement lasted well into the 1960's and, in many cases, the remaining recordings made by the AFRS are now the only audio record of many, many domestic radio broadcasts from this period.In addition to releasing edited versions of complete entertainment shows, the AFRS - which was later renamed the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service, or AFRTS - also used both live and prerecorded musical selections from various broadcasts, rehearsal linechecks, and domestic recording sessions to compile an on-going music library, also distributed via 16" disks. These recordings, too, often constitute the only remaining recordings of musical selections broadcast in the US from 1942 through the mid-1960's. These ten discs are 16" vinyl Armed Forces Radio and Television Service Station and/or Musical Library recordings dating from the 1950s and are being offered at a very low opening bid price with no reserve. The photo below shows a representative sampling of discs, as well as a typical label -- all of which look, aside from content information, pretty much the same. They are all in near excellent condition, having come from the radio station of a stateside Air Force Base, and having been sleeved and stored in a warehouse for the past twenty five years. (Sleeves are not, however, included with the discs.) These recordings were never made commercially available, at least not in this format, and were distributed exclusively to military radio broadcasting facilities, making them extremely rare to find today.
