Offered with no reserve is the rare first translation of the complete plays of Publius Terentius Afer (Terence) into English, translated by Richard Bernard, and printed in quarto at London in 1614 for John (âe~Johannisâe(tm)) Legatt. The volume includes the complete text in both English and Latin of the extant works of Terence, considered the finest Roman comedic playwright and a model of Latin verse from his own time until the present. The six comedies that comprise the volume are as follows, in Latin and in English: Andriae (Andria, or âe~The Girl From Androsâe(tm)); Eunuchi (The Eunuch); Heautontim (The Self-Tormentor); Adelphi (The Brothers); Hecyra (The Mother-In-Law); and Phormio (Phormio, or âe~The Tricks of Phormioâe(tm)). The full title reads as follows: âeoeTerence in English / Fabulae Comici Facetissimi et Elegantissimi Poetae Terentii Omnes Anglicae Factae & hac nova forma editae: opera ac industria R.B. in Axholmiensi insula Lincolnsherii Epwortheatis / Quarta edition multo emendatior.âe Terence was probably born at Carthage, and lived between about 185/195 B.C. to 159 B.C. Born a slave, he was eventually sold to the Roman Senator Terentius Lucanus, who being impressed with Terenceâe(tm)s abilities, granted Terence his freedom. Terence lived his short adult life at Rome, wrote his six immortal comedies, left Rome at 25, and was never seen or heard from again. Terenceâe(tm)s comedies have been lauded throughout history, gaining the recommendation of no less than Martin Luther for their pedagogical value. The present volume is complete in all respects and bound in early 17th century vellum, with the title written in a contemporary hand at the head of the spine. The binding is quite solid; it continues well in its protective function. The upper right corner of the front cover is folded back and the vellum is a little soiled. Internally, the volume is very clean, with only light toning, clear print and ample margins throughout. As may be seen in the photos below, several upper and lower outer corners are folded. The volume numbers 428 pages plus the title and preliminaries; it collates A-Z8, Aa-Dd8, Ee2. The volume measures 18.5 cm by 14.8 cm by 3.5 cm; each page measures 184 mm by 141 mm. In all, this is a very desirable copy of the first translation of the complete works of Terence into English, a bilingual English-Latin edition printed in quarto at London in 1614, bound in full 17th century vellum, translated by Richard Bernard, complete in all respects and offered with no reserve.
