U. S. RAILROAD SURVEY COLORED LITHOGRAPH TETON VALLEY Orig inal Hand Tinted Lithograph Print Titled, "Teton Valley" in Montana, from the book, Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practical and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississipppi River to the the Pacific Ocean . T were 13 volumes, and this illustration is from volume XII, which dealt with the survey from St. Paul, Minnesota to Puget Sound, under the leadership of Isaac I. Stevens, Governor of Washington Territory. This expedition occurred between 1853 to 1855, and was published by the War Department, Washington D. C. in 1860. These Railroad Surveys were the first attempt at a comprehensive, systematic geographical exploration of the western regions, and some of the earliest images of the west. It measures 8 3/4 x 11 1/2 on ivory woven paper, with the image itself measuring approximately 6 x 9. It is printed on the upper left border, USPRR Exp. & Surveys -- 47th & 49th Parallels and on the upper right, General Report -- Plate XXVIII, and the title is centered on the margin beneath the image. Just under the image on the left is the name of the artist, Stanley, and on the right is the name of the lithographer, Sarony, Major & Knapp, Lith. 449 Broadway, N.Y.
