TH1958 Fabulous Glazes AntiqueArt Nouveau Majolica Tile Henry Richards Rd1903 • Style: Art nouveau • Technique: Moulded majolica • Manufacturer: Henry Richards • Dimensions: 6" x 6" • Date: Design registered 1903 An excellent art nouveau tile of the 'triple tulip' genre richly glazed in five colours with an additional black stain painted over the raised outline. Richards are the only company to have done this to any great extent and it was to take away the bright white of the outline detracting from the rich glazes. So as with tuebline when the outline is usually dark and fades in to the background unless intended otherwise by the artist the bright white outline that can spoil is disguised. This design is indeed one of the most often erroneously described as tubeline yet on this example one can barely see the outlines for the surface is almost as smooth as glass. Excellent condition the top corners slightly trimmed for the original fixing, shallow chip upper left and touch of roughness top edge, surface vear near perfect and most richly and brilliantly glazed.
