This auction is for a Thacher’s Calculating Instrument Made by Keuffel and Esser of New York in 1914. The instrument is a cylindrical slide rule patented by bridge engineer Edwin Thacher. The instrument itself measures about 4 ½ inches by 20 inches. It has 20 scales on a drum that rotates and slides inside a rotating barrel with another 20 scales. The cylinders have mahogany knobs on the ends and are mounted on a brass frame, and the frame is mounted on a mahogany wood base. The base has paper directions and rules mounted and covered with shellac or something similar. This instrument has the original instruction manual and comes in a wooden box (probably maple) with a removable lid. There are no cracks, dents, tears or any other visible damage to the scales. They turn and slide smoothly. Of course
