Southeast Asian Antiques Porcelain and Ceramics Figures and Figurines Thai Elephant Rider Si Satchanalai Kiln 13th to 16th C. A very, very cute ceramic figure from the Thai kiln of Si Satchanalai of a man riding an elephant. Iron brown glaze still ads to the elephant and to the figure, although the glaze is highly degraded from burial and age. The Si Satchanalai kiln site is world famous for the variety of their figures - some of which portray women nursing infants, elephant riders, wrestlers - actually the gamut of life. This is one of the things that makes these figures so appealing - as well as the fact that they are 500 to 700 years old! Si Satchanalai ceramic ware is in many famous world museums, including the Toyo Kan Gallery of the Japanese National Museum at Ueno Park. A marvelous collection of such objects has been depicted in the Gems of Southeast Asian Art art catalogue of the Siam Tohchingbok Collection as displayed at the Gotoh Museum in Tokyo in 2000. A figure nearly identical to our elephant rider is displayed on page 82 of that catalogue. View seller's other items to see this catalogue. The legs and head of this figure have been professionally restored to a museum quality level. The figure's over all size is 3 3/4" (9.5 cm) tall and 3" (7.5 cm) from nose to tail. The piece is very, very adorable. * * * * * * * *
