This estate found Thatcher's (also spelled Thacher's) Calculating Instrument is a very complex early slide rule. Impressed in gold into the mahogany base is the model number 4013 and under that 4828, in a bit smaller type. To the left of the numbers is the Keuffel & Esser NY logo in a circle and on the right of the numbers is the Thatcher's logo. The cylinder measures nearly 20"; from the outside edge of the the handles it measures approximately 23". The instruction panel on the base is missing a little bit along the center edge and a couple of the rods have been bent, but not badly. This had been stored in a basement for a long time. T is some discoloration to the surface, mostly on the rods, but they are still legible. We were not sure what the hols were for on the outer brass supports. From looking at timy images in books, it appears that 2 brass rods held a magnifying glass. We didn't find that or the box that this would have been in-probably lost in a past move. This was found with the parent's items in a packed room. Most of the items found dated from the 1880's to the 1920's, so we figure this is somew in that period. On the cylinder is the patent date of 1881. I'm not an expert on this type of item, so if I missed something important in the write up, please e-mail before bidding on this item.
