A must for any Disney collector! is a blurb about the exhibition: Exciting news not only for Disney fans but also for art and animation aficionados is "The Art of Disney" exhibition, which will be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in Koto Ward from July 15 to Sept 24. At the exhibition, 350 selected items of original artwork from Disney's Animation Research Library (ARL) and 200 items of Disney artwork from 45 years ago that were discovered last year in the faculty of engineering at Chiba University will be displayed. It will be the biggest-ever exhibition of Disney animation art. The idea of holding an exhibition came together last year, when the forgotten pieces of Disney artwork were re-discovered at one of the storage units in Chiba University. The pictures were donated by Walt Disney Co of the United States to the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, after they were exhibited at some department stores in Japan around 1960. The university said it took over the pictures from the museum in 1963 apparently for education purposes. The images then became unaccounted for until they were recently discovered in a warehouse of the university's engineering department "We are definitely excited hearing the news about the discovery of the lost art," said Lella Smith, the director of the ARL, whose collection is the largest archive of animation art, numbering close to 60 million items. It includes conceptual design work, model sheets, animation, backgrounds, layouts, exposure sheets, maquettes, reference photographs, audio and video tapes, and many story and other reference books. However, t were a few key pieces that were missing in the archive. "The original pieces that were used for 'Sleeping Beauty' were among the pieces in t at Chiba University that were missing from our archives. The background that was used is one of my favorites. It is so detailed that it's simply amazing," said Smith. The pictures also include "Cinderella," from 1950 and "Fantasia," from 1940, as well as an original picture for "Flowers and Trees," which was released in 1932 as the world's earliest all-color animation film. The public rarely gets to see the vast collection of Disney art. The collection is kept at an undisclosed location of ARL somew on the west coast of the U.S. and only the animators and researchers at Disney are allowed to see the artworks. "T are a few reasons why we decided to do the exhibition," said Smith. "It's been 50 years since the original exhibition, and I thought the children and the grandchildren of the visitors of the old exhibition should have an opportunity to see the art. And Japanese people accept the art as fine arts and love animation." "I was awed and overwhelmed at the same time when I went to see the collection at ARL," said Miyoshi, whose duty was to select the 350 pieces to bring over to Japan for the exhibition. "They had everything you can ever imagine in superb condition." Like the old exhibition 45 years ago, the concept will be "the process of animation." This is once in a lifetime opportunity to witness the original artwork by the world's leading entertainer with your own eyes.
