This is one of the BEST Early 19th Century New England INLAID Bible or Document Boxes. Chestnut with Mahogany and Walnut Inlay, circa 1800-1840 in the ORIGINAL surface with the MOST INCREDIBLE INLAID DECORATION. This type of box was made to display on a chest or table and was used to hold valuable papers or possessions or the family Bible. This fine box has a nice applied bottom molding and still retains its original brass hinges, brass lock and even the original key. The inlaid decoration is the BEST!!. Highly patterned designs on the front, both sides, the top and even the back. The case has great formed and delicate dovetails. The interior still retains its original wallpaper. The condition is very nice, t are no repairs or restoration at all, just the typical wear and tear you would see from 200 years of use. Theses types of boxes were made to sit directly on top of the chest or table. Many of these have over the years "acquired" a newer base,or have been refinished but this one is all original. The size is wonderful, it is 13" across the front, it is 6 1/2" deep and it stands just 4" high . A truly great find especially in such fine condition and surface, usually these are in poor shape and have been stripped of all their paint and patina.
