One of the BEST Early 19th Century New England Bible or Document Boxes, pine circa 1800-1840 in the most fantastic ORIGINAL GRUNGY RED GRAIN PAINTED DECORATION. FANTASTIC SWIRLED DECORATION AND DESIGN ON ALL FOUR SIDES AND THE TOP. Great undisturbed square head nails. This type of box was made to display on a chest or table and was used to hold valuable papers or possessions or the family Bible. THIS GREAT BOX IS IN perfect CONDITION!!! It retains its original hinges, lock and even the original key. The inside is covered in its original Robin's Egg Blue paper as is the bottom. The box even retains its original mahogany divided insert (You never see these). The paint is the BEST YOU CAN FIND, original, grungy, crackled, PERFECT. T are no repairs or restoration at all, just the typical wear and tear you would see from almost 200 years of use. T is only one small "scratch" as shown in the photos, it is on the left side. Theses types of boxes were made without any applied base and were meant to sit directly on top of the chest or table. Many of these have over the years "acquired" a newer base,or have been refinished but this one is all original. The size is wonderful, it is 12" across the front, it is 10" deep and it stands just 4" high . A truly great find especially in such fine condition and surface, usually these are in poor shape and have been stripped of all their paint and patina.
